I always assumed it was resource allocation/processing (delta sleep calculations, in attempts to stabilize frame rates) during transitions. I have all slideshow timing set to ~30 +/- 5 secs. Visually, I experience slow downs (or pauses [AEON], in the worst case), not distortion. Concurrent 'Fraps' invocations offers some of the best insight into operational (in)efficiency. Sprite (initiations), are still a VERY resource intensive operation... which I know, many don't use anyway. Although I see instantaneous framerates north of 60 fps, I can't sustain consistent rates much above 40 fps (@1920x1080) ... and I have pretty decent hardware.
I have seen G-force slow down to a crawl while displaying what looks like a relatively simple config then speed back up when the next one starts. Doesn't happen with all configs just some.

I think the problem can occur during transition periods, and are magnified, if multiple Config categories, overlap transition windows (READ: trying to switch a Sprite, at the same time as a WS morph is occuring). It is not always that the CPU runs out of cycles, but rather the speed at which the 'sleep' calculation responds to the dynamic situation. Upon startup, it seems to take ~10sec * (on MY systems anyway), to attempt to sync to the desired frame rate. There are all sorts of tradeoffs trying to address this, rather difficult, problem.

* using Fraps as the frame monitor. During capture, Fraps can lock the frame rate at 30fps steadfast after ~10 secs

Thanks, Jerohm! That's a great explanation.

But, just to be clear, these slow downs were occurring before the latest update, right?

No new issues/problems are present in 5.4b2 ... just that tearing, as I understand it, didn't seem to be a problem in previous versions of GF.

I have several hundred Sprites, and for some reason, I am seeing a far better random, and complete presentation of them with this latest beta...
Coincidence??? ... maybe ... maybe not.
I might just be mentally ill.

:!: Web Site Idiosyncrasy: The posts' timestamps are correct ONLY AFTER I login... I think this is a recent development.
Again, we can't totally dismiss the whole mentally ill possibility

I can't tell if it is exactly correct yet(i.e., within an hour), but I would guess things are ok.

Hello jerohm

I made a test post to check the time and then I got distracted from what I was doing and didn't finish.

I just set my clock to GMT+7 hours and the time matches perfect.

Hello All

Regarding Andy's 'SoundSpectrum Update' post. Spring is just around the corner so could we have a progress report?

If making a mobile app helps keep Sound Spectrum around longer then I am all for it. Even better if it is a success and helps fund further development of current SS products. I surely buy an Android product if you make one.

That being said I don't think the "sun is setting" anytime soon for the desktop, this is not just my opinion but can be quickly backed up with hard data.

For the billions of people who work on them or game or run media servers or a hundred other reasons I don't think they will be tossing them in the dumpster to be replaced with an IPAD, I think often people mistake the growth in the mobile market with the death of the desktop and its just not true. They both have their place and its only in recent years that mobile has become more capable of something more then just being a phone and running small apps.

I think the gaming scene on PC alone totally disproves the death of the PC. True of course mobile offers a vast new market and can appeal to those who don't or would never own a desktop as well as cost factors but a lot of people own both for different reasons.

As someone who has been in the tech industry since 1985 I have heard the death of this and the death of that many times so I just could not resist saying my 2 cents.

Thanks, DireWolf! We certainly don't plan to stop making desktop products any time soon, either. We are just recognizing the need to expand.

Hello Frank

So where is the progress report, just asking?

DireWolf has put his finger right on the button regarding desktops, and smartphones. People do own, and use both in different ways.

I have in this thread already wished SoundSpectrum success with the app for iOS.
